Vision + Passion = Superior Results

As I was falling asleep tonight, I realized something that I just have to write down – the formula for personally achieving superior results at most anything we do:

VISION + PASSION = SUPERIOR RESULTS

I like boiling things down to their simplest form sometimes, because it makes it easier to know where to focus.

What I realize is this.  Sometimes when I find myself unmotivated to do something that I know I really want to get done, what works for me is to spend some time envisioning what life will be like when it’s done.  I think about how I will feel when it’s done, what it will look like when it’s done, what other people will say when it’s done and what could happen if only it were done…

Then I close my eyes and the magic happens.  I concentrate on visualizing what it will look like when it’s done.  Visualizing with as much clarity and detail as possible is required.  That’s when the magic begins.

This kind of self-motivation is necessary at times for entrepreneurs, who are faced with what seems like at times to be insurmountable obstacles.   I believe that vision is what fuels passion.

You often hear highly-successful entrepreneurs heralded as “visionaries”.  That’s because they truly do have a vision of what the end-product and end-result will look like ahead of time, and they continue to see “what’s possible” even after the initial vision becomes a reality.

Vision is the fuel that drives us and gives us the mental energy and passion to get things done – to just put our blinders on to all the obstacles, the naysayers, the disbelievers and to plow through whatever obstacles lie in front of us to make that vision come true.

Vision helps us create a “mind map” that represents a new world, an imaginary world where things are different.  Then our mind uses this map to sort out how to actually get there.  And as we work out the details, we gain clarity around the steps that need to be taken to achieve the vision.  This is what fuels the passion to actually take action to get it done.

So the next time you find yourself (as we all do at times) depressed by the state of the world, down after watching the day’s news reports, de-energized after talking to the boss or dealing with whatever it is that demotivates you, try this…

1. Change your state by going into a quiet place (e.g., your office) and closing the door.

2. Get comfortable and lean back in your chair (if that’s possible), and close your eyes.

3. Think about what you want (or need) to get done and begin imagining what life will feel like when you’re done, and what the world will look like when it’s done (whatever it is you need to get done).

4. Imagine as clearly as you can what the end result will look like and how it will feel to show off your accomplishments and product (or whatever it is).  If you need to, write it down – draw it, sketch it on your whiteboard or a piece of paper.   Do whatever it takes to gain clarity and closure on what it will look like when it’s finished.

5. Then, it may take a few hours or even a few days, but something magical will be happening within your mind.  Your subconscious mind is now programmed to “work things out” and chart the course for you to achieve what you have committed to in your vision.

Don’t be surprised if you have trouble falling asleep at night (as I sometimes do), with your mind racing and thoughts about potential solutions flowing through your head at the oddest of times.

After a brief time, you will suddenly “awaken” and it will all be clear.  Now I don’t mean you’ll actually wake up, as if from sleeping, but I’m talking about the passion within will arrive, along with clarity of purpose and a new level of commitment unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

If this happens to you (as it sometimes does for me), then you should feel blessed.  You are on your way to achieving something that might not have been possible before – before you applied vision to fuel the passion and commitment necessary to making a real breakthrough and success!

I once heard it said that “you can’t motivate someone who isn’t already motivated to do something”.  To that I say, well, maybe YOU can’t motivate them, but I can (if it’s a worthwhile objective).  Share a compelling vision and story about what life will be like when it’s done – enough to cause them to truly think about what you’ve shared, and to begin doing their own visioneering – once you learn how to do this, you will become a true leader – one who fuels the passion to succeed in others.
