I received an email from Perry Marshall, Google AdWords expert and one of the few online marketing “gurus” I still pay close attention to, as he always seems to come up with interesting, insightful content to share. Today, he came up with another good one – “Why Fancy Often Fails“.
Perry makes a compelling case as to why, for example, when we see someone use a flashy marketing or advertising technique, then we try to copy or replicate their success, it just falls flat. Why is that?
In this YouTube video interview with Gavin Harrison, a very talented drummer and musician, he explains the difference between using “technique” and just going through the motions vs. being truly creative, self-aware and immersing yourself in your market performance.
This video caused me to stop and think about how I am coming across: in our marketing, on my blog, in emails and on our websites – are we just going through the “standard motions”, or are we actually “immersed in our market”?
Watch this video – it’s only 6 minutes:
We’ve all been taught to “model” ourselves and our businesses after others who are successful. There’s a fine line between understanding what has enabled success vs. trying to copy someone else’s technique or pattern of success.
More often than not, the roots of such success is much more than the superficial artifacts you can see on the surface, and instead runs much deeper and stems, in part, from the passion and creativity with which they “perform” in their marketplace.
So I wonder…are you immersed in your market and what you do? Or are you just going through the motions, applying the rote, standard marketing campaign practices you’ve grown accustomed to when “doing your job”?
I know Gavin’s insights are causing me to take a fresh look at myself and my approach.
